Core Aeration

‘Opening’ up the soil annually is extremely important to the health of your lawn, especially when we are dealing with clay based soils.  Opening or loosening the soil allows for grass roots to grow, allows for better water absorption and many other benefits to the lawn.

  • Soils, especially clay based, compact over time from mowing, pets, playing and during the freeze/thaw cycles.
  • Compacted soils choke small grass roots slowly thinning your lawn. Thick turf prevents weeds from growing in your lawn.
  • Thin lawns not only allow weeds to grow but also require more water to protect them from the heat. Thick lawns protect themselves from weed infestation and drought.
  • Grass roots also need oxygen to promote healthy growth, aerating opens up the soil and provides oxygen flow to the root zone.
  • Compacted soils allow for standing water which can starve the lawn from oxygen, killing it, or literally boil the lawn when temperatures are hot. Aerating annually saves money on your watering bill
  • Core aeration also controls thatch. Thatch is the organic material layer between the grass and soil. Thatch promotes disease control and helps maintain moisture in the soil.  Power raking or ‘dethatching’ removes all thatch which is extremely stressful and allows for other problems.
  • Aerating is also beneficial is aiding in fertilizer uptake and use.
  • Aerations are best done in early spring or late fall. At 4 Seasons Lawn Care, Inc. we prefer to aerate in March (if Mother Nature allows) and late October for two reasons:
  1. Mother Nature typically provides the appropriate moisture for a good job.
  2. Walking on the plugs that are left is difficult so our timing allows for the plugs to breakdown when people are not active on the lawn.
