Fertilization

Lawns need to be fed but there is a time, method, and place for it.

The Basics of Fertilizer

The Program

Fertilizer MUST be applied at proper intervals and levels throughout the growing season. As few as three (3) applications will produce a pretty lawn but five (5) is optimum (never more than five because this can lead to disease).

The Weather

How much fertilizer and what type is dependent on Mother Nature. During cool months, the lawn wants the maximum healthy amount, but during hot months it can only handle a reduced amount without burning.

The Biology and Chemistry

Fertilizer is absorbed predominantly through the blade of grass exactly the way a derma patch works on our skin. Many professionals, that do not stay current, still believe it is taken up by the root zone. There is a good reason why the root zone doesn’t take up very much fertilizer, nitrogen does not bind with the soil so it is washed away from the root zone quickly. This is why, at 4 Seasons Lawn Care, we never use a dry fertilizer. There are dry slow release formulations that can make the nitrogen available to the roots, they are coated with a ‘plastic’ that slowly erodes releasing the nitrogen. With our liquid formulation and overall program, your lawn should never need more than what we give it.
